My Creative Space

And basting, and hoping, and wishing, and basting...
nice lines courtesy of the walking foot
And the completed top!
finished back - featuring a bit of my own fabric screenprinted at Harvest

I spent a lovely few days at the beach shack working on a baby quilt, and it is the first quilt I ever made with wadding and, erm, actual quilting... It's a present for some lovely friends who are expecting their first baby.
I took my darning foot in the hope of doing some freestyle quilting, but boy, that was the last time I tried that. Donning some washing up gloves and attempting to wrangle the quilt through the poor Bernina swearing loudly at 8 in the morning is not an experience I want to repeat. All I managed to produce were some sad lines that looked like worms. So I decided to quilt it in the ditch, which is just a fancy way of saying follow the lines. I used a newly purchased walking foot, which works great, if you work out how to attach it to the machine (thank you husband with the relevant skills). And I basted the heck out of it too - I didn't pay much attention to the basting process first, which resulted in the quilt practically eating itself when I started the stitching. It just bunched up like a Victorian frock. So I did it again, and I really hated that part and was prepared to declare that quilting is not my thing. I just had to repeat 'pins are your friends' as I downed coffees and basted until my knees were getting sore from crawling around on the floor. But when I sewed those lines and the quilt turned into that lovely quilty texture I did get quite hooked on the process. I do love the result, particularly the texture. I love the fabrics too. They seem special to me now that I am using what I have in my stash and not buying any new fabric so that I can downsize and start focussing on using recycled fabric.

... currently you can find me on the floor, chasing my niece with the camera.

A second pair of pants and skirt I designed last week. I am really enjoying making my own patterns.
I found Soozs' blog so very helpful. And inspiring, confidence-wise! Another blog I recently discovered via  Gina is Sarah Vain and Tall, run by Anne, who has thrown caution (and other such boring ideas) to the wind and set out to start her own craft-tastic business. All hats off! Actually keep yours on since it is so cold in Melbourne. I miss Melbourne - say hello from me!

PS: That is my mum's leg. The one in the red sandal. The other one is my husband's leg. Credit where credit is due I say.

My Creative Space

I'm experimenting with felting larger objects for the home - this is a hastily crocheted test piece that I'm now washing at 90 degrees.

Since I am living at home with my parents at the moment to look after my dad, my creative space is my bed. Pretty much. There's not much room anywhere else!

And there are creative ventures from the past to be marvelled at. I feel much like this bird that I made a lifetime ago when I was about 7. Currently taking a break in a lampshade.

I've had fun today looking at more creative spaces over here

My Creative Space

... last weekend's screen printing session. I've got lots of ideas but no where to print them!

My prints from last week's screenprinting course

It seems that we're going through another rough patch, my dad is ill in hospital at home and it's the worst thing in the world, not being there. I feel like crying all the time so I am constantly knitting, sewing or crocheting to distract myself until we find out what's going on.

So far I have made a dog softie for my dad, a Burda top, a neckwarmer, and working on another quilt.
Keeping the mind distracted is a good thing. The RSI I am developing is not so good. I am trying to knit using my left hand and wrist for moving the yarn across - any tips for RSI-free knitting always welcome!

It's looking rather lovely this week: finished Gocco invites - ready to ship! I stamped the recycled envelopes with a lace fan stamp. I am obsessed with stamps - and the Gocco obviously!

Saturday night at our place - making more place cards! I wasn't ever going to get around to producing 20 mini-quilts... was I. So now I'm glueing lace, tieing lace,  stamping on lace. They all look different.

Feeling somewhat tired and a bit jittery.

This weekend we are going to hide away at the beach and start goccoing the invitations - I need to get my groove back by then. We have to do 80 invitations (30 for the Aussie wedding, 50 for the German one), 80 CD covers and 80 envelopes. In two languages!

Love it. Never letting it go again!

I spent most of this week playing around with graphics and writing a little tutorial on gocco-ing photos, you can read it here. Not much going on in the craft room - it's too hot and I really don't think I can handle another day of it. An attempt to refashion some old lampshades I found on the street resulted in a very hot and bothered me, trying to detach my hands from the bin (spray glue accident).
No more until it's cooled down!

My creative space this week - we are working on designing our invitations and other bits and pieces, so this week has been pretty much all about taking photos and photoshopping. And then we will print them! With my birthday present, which is in the cupboard, and I'm not allowed to tell you about it yet! I'm so excited. On Saturday I will get to unwrap it!

My Creative Space

The space odyssey is back - thanks to Kirsty for hosting again this year!

This week I have been playing around with paper, lace and buttons. We wanted the placecards for our wedding dinner to be really personal, so I've decided to create photo cards. Brown for the girls, white for the boys. Quilted background sewn on to the card, and photo sewn on to the mini-quilt for the boys, lace and buttons for the ladies. I am not sure about the stamp writing, in fact I am pretty sure I don't like it,  so I think I will borrow my inlaws' old typewriter and write names in small across the top. This weekend I shall be mostly making baby quilt backgrounds!

Also featured are my favourite little birdie salt and pepper shakers from Dorothy and Evelyn - I love them so much I haven't been able to bring myself to actually put salt and pepper in them.

Here are some detailed shots of the cards.

my creative space: word snow

it's snowing words today. at least on my christmas card.

Do you fancy making one too? It's very simple - just be aware that old paper and dictionaries may be harmed in the process...

This will probably be my last space post for the year so thank you Kirsty for hosting the meme every week! Looking forward to spaceing more next year!

My Creative Space

... has moved to the loungeroom because I have a friend of mine staying. I've started my very first quilt -in my usual haphazard way. I will figure it out as a I  go along! Thanks Kate for recommending great Etsy fabric sellers and also telling me I can't get it THAT wrong! I've cut some squares and I'm looking forward to putting it all together. It will be a simple one for my little niece. Just the 58th present I've made for her - you have no idea how much I'm looking forward to giving her the very first cuddle!

Fabrics are from Cottonblue.

More creative spaces, as always, over at kirsty's!
